The Chennai Rifle Club came into existence in the year 1952 with a small number of Members for the purpose of creating a spirit of sportsmanship, discipline, self reliance and self-defense in any emergency vide a Government Order of the then Government of Madras. Since then the Chennai Rifle Club is functioning and has grown in strength and is continuing to be an active institution promoting the shooting sport in the city of Chennai.

The Club celebrated its Golden Jubilee in the year 2003 after successfully completing 50 glorious years in the cause of Shooting Sport.

The total strength of the Club is limited to 500 Members. The present strength of the Club is 475. There are four categories of Membership namely, Patron, Life Member, Annual member, Honorary Member and Junior member (including Lady Members). The Members are admitted into the Club after careful screening by the Police Department.

Over the years, the Club has produced several talented Shooters some of whom have won Medals in the National and International Competitions creating new records. Our Shooters have represented the country at the Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, Asian Shooting Championships, World Cup and other International Championships. Special mention has to be made about Mrs. Roopa Srinath Nee-Unnikrishnan Member of our Club who had participated in various International shooting Competitions abroad and had brought laurels to the Country and to the Club. She is the only proud Shooter from Tamilnadu to have been awarded the prestigious "Arjuna Award".

Besides a few members of our Club are called upon by the National Rifle Association of India to act as Technical Officials. Coaches, Managers and Juries in International Competitions.

The Club possesses 2 Shooting Ranges one at Egmore for Rifle & Pistol events and the other at Alamadi for Shotgun events. The Range at Egmore is situated within the compound of the Old Commissioner of Police office Complex at Egmore and it has a 50 Meters range and a 25 Meters Ranges and an Air Conditioned 10 Meter Indoor Range for Air Rifle and Air Pistol events consisting of 36 Shooting Lanes .

The Chennai Rifle Club also boasts of State of the Art Electronic Targets for 10M Range for Air Rifle and Air Pistol events on par with International Shooting ranges, being the first of its kind in the State of Tamilnadu.

This Range has been named as Dr. B. Sivanthi Adityan Shooting Sports Complex in gratitude for the yeoman service rendered by the Late Dr. B. Sivanthi Adityan for the development of Shooting Sport in the State and also for the growth of the Chennai Rifle Club to its present stature.

The Range at Alamadi is also known as Dr. B. Sivanthi Adityan Trap & Skeet Shooting Range. This Range is of International Standard. Latest sophisticated equipments have been fitted in this Range and is being maintained by the Chennai Rifle Club. The 7th South Asian Federation Games -1995 was held at this Range. The Club had conducted many State and National Shooting Championships in Rifle & Pistol & Shotgun events at the above Ranges.

Shooting practices are given at the above ranges Rifle, Pistol & Shotgun events 6 days a week including Saturdays & Sundays. To promote budding shooters and to improve their marksmanship Chennai Rifle Club conducts competitions once in three months for the members, this also creates an atmosphere of competitive shooting thereby helping them to be competitive during competitions.

In view of the steep rise in the cost of ammunition and to encourage shooters to practice regularly ammunition is supplied to the members at concessional rates for target Shooting practice. Our Club probably is one among the few in India to provide ammunition at subsidized rate to benefit the Shooters.

The Chennai Rifle Club has an excellent rapport with the city police which provides the required man power for safe operation of the Range during Shooting Practice and Competition days.

The Commissioner of Police, Chennai, is the Ex-officio President of Chennai Rifle Club. The Club is managed by an Executive Committee comprising of President ,Vice- President , Hony. Secretary, Hony. Joint Secretary, Hony. Treasurer and 9 Executive Committee Members.

During 2017 The Chennai Rifle Club conducted The 9th South Zone Shooting Championship Competition in Rifle & Pistol events at the Police Shooting Range at Veerapuram 3rd Battallion Campus more than 700 Competitors participated in the above event including about 40 Para Athletes. The 9th South Zone Shooting Championship Competition in Rifle & Pistol events 2017 was conducted successfully from 22-08-2017 to 26-08-2017 under the able guidance and support of the Tamilnadu Police who were kind enough to extend many facilities including trained shooting range personnel to assist in the safe conduct of the event. The Honorable Chief Minister of Tamilnadu was kind enough to grace the Prize distribution ceremony and give away the prizes and honour the winners & participants.

The All India G.V.Mavalankar Shooting Championship-2018 Competitions In Rifle & Pistol Events 2018 was held at the Police Shooting Range situated at the Tamilnadu Special Police 3rd Battalion, Veerapuram, Avadi from 30th August to 8th August 2018 .More than 2000 Shooters from All over India participated in this prestigious event representing their respective State. which are in turn affiliated to the National Rifle Association of India.

The Chennai Rifle Club the Club initiated the Student Membership Program in March 2018 to promote budding shooters and to identify and encourage fresh talent into the Shooting sport. It was inaugurated by Thiru Dr.A.K.Viswanathan,IPS., the erstwhile Commissioner of Police & President of the Chennai Rifle Club.

More than 110 students in the age group of 10-17 years from various Schools have enrolled in the Student Membership Program and Students from Financially weaker sections have also been inducted into the Program . The Club has a Special Scholarship Scheme under which training for such students who are from Financially weaker strata is fully funded by the Club from its own funds. All the Members of the Student Membership Program are being put through a well planned & structured training program at the Club under the watchful eyes of expert coaches. Coaching is carried out in both disciplines of Air Rifle & Air Pistol Shooting , during the weekends Yoga & Physical training is imparted to the Students to strengthen their Body & Soul . Mental training which forms a very important role in shaping a strong willed Shooter is also imparted to the Students by expert coaches to face adverse shooting conditions.

The Chennai Rifle Club has Three dedicated Coaches in its payroll exclusively for the Student Membership Program.The timings for the Student Membership Program is from 6-8 A.M & 3-7 P.M on Weekdays and during Weekends it is 7 A.M to 1 P.M

The Chennai Rifle Club has identified and groomed many Shooters who have participated in All India Shooting Championship Competition and State level Competitions and won many Medals and accolades to the Club.

The Chennai Rifle club under the Stewardship of its President Dr. Sandeep Rai Rathore - IPS., Commissioner of Police, Greater Chennai has grown exponentially. He has been the driving force behind the Club and under his guidance and support the Club and its members will Shine with greater vigor .
